Greed Island Finale (Hunter x Hunter)

I recently bought the complate OVA of Hunter X Hunter’s Greed Island Finale, and can I just say– WOW! This OVA takes off after Gon and Killua part ways with Kurapika and Leorio and enter Greed Island in order to find Gon’s father, Gin (in the OVA, it was spelled GING).

The first OVA had them meeting Bisuke, who takes Gon and Killua under her wing as apprentices. As their strength increases, the two also continue their search for the hundred cards in order to finish the game.

But even as they come closer to the prize, The Bomber, a psychopathic player wrecks havoc in Greed Island killing anybody who possessed the 100 cards. Will Gon and Killua be strong enough to get all the cards and live through Bomber’s deadly technique? Old enemies also find themselves in Greed Island, as the Spider Gang and Hisoka (Hizuka) also try to find the Nen user who can free Kuroro from Kurapika’s spell. Hunter x Hunter’s genre is decidedly shounen, in fact, most characters are male and there are strong yaoi undercurrents in previous and ongoing episodes. From it’s original anime fighting style form, Greed Island OVAs turn into a roleplaying game-flavored adventure. I’d like to also point out that finally, a prominent fighting female enters the scene in the form of Bisuke– Gon and Killua’s teacher in the ways of nen (aura).

This OVA is highly recommended for Hunter fanatics out there– although I must admit in this review, there are still a lot of questions left unanswered in this OVA. Still, the animation was pretty good, the story engaging enough and the characters lovable. This is one of those anime that has the potential to be deep and dark but in the OAV, it was pretty light and viewable enough for kids.

The Greed Island Finale contains 14 episodes, here’s a brief over view of each:

 1. Masadora x Big Strides x Mad Bomber

Gon and Killua undergo brutal training at the hands of a seemingly demure and girly Bisuke, in the mean time, the Bomber is introduced as a traitor to his group who will stop at nothing to collect all the cards.

2. Without Nen x New Year x Hunter Exam

Gon and Killua separate becuase Killua has to go back to the real world to take the Hunter exam.

3. An Encounter x Kuroro x The Gold Dust Girl

As Gon and Killua continue to collect cards, the Spider Gang find themselves in Greed Island.

4. Contact x Razor x United Front

In order to get the number 96 card, Tsubo of Coast, GOn, Killua and Bisuke team up with other players. There they encounter Razor the pirate and game master of Greed Island.

5. Meeting Again x Hisoka x Sporting Event

Gon and Killua team up with Tsugegara’s team and Hisoka in order to beat Razor and his team in different sporting events. See Hisoka’s butt!!! Hahahahahaha!
