To say that opposites attract would be too extreme when asked to describe one of my favorite couples, Misao and Aoshi. They are not the main couple of Ruruoni Kenshin, in fact, you can’t even call them an official couple like Kaoru and Kenshin but Aoshi and Misao have definitely captured the hearts, minds and imaginations of otaku fans everywhere because of their seemingly opposing personalities.
Misao and Asohi are not that opposite… I mean, aside from external traits and a few personality deviances, deep inside, the two in my humble opinion are very much alike. Both of them possess determination, stubbornness, strength of character and leadership qualities and a history that ties them to a common bond, the Oniwabanshuu.
Makimachi Misao is sixteen years old and although she looks younger than her actual age, she’s really quite mature (^_^). Her genkiness misleads people to assume she’s nothing more than a little girl but when things get tough, she’s always running there at the frontline, heart and several kunais (her preferred weapon) up her sleeve. She’s impulsive, she’s loud and she’s sensitive when teased “weasel-girl”, “kid” or worse when someone notices her lack of ahem, chest. Misao first appeared in Ruruoni Kenshin as a spunky female thief who outwitted a bunch of perverted men. Finally, another female who fights after the Shura the pirate episode! Misao is one of the four ladies in the entire series who can fight so that speaks a lot about her character. And also because of Aoshi’s defection to Shishiro’s side, Misao declared herself as okashira of the Oni gang.
On the other hand, Shinamori Aoshi despite being known as the Icicle of Oniwabanshuu, is someone I think whose passions run deep. He’s far from being a squeakly clean character like Misao, he went on a killing rampage to prove himself to be the strongest fighter but it also took his soul. He was severely traumatized by the death of his comrades who saved him from sure death from a gatling gun. He was already the silent type in the beginning but the loss of good friends made him a ruthless and merciless man. He may not say a word to you but his ice-blue eyes (squeal, faint) have a way of letting people know whether he’s pissed or he’s pleased, or whenever he thinks about Misao (which he did quite a bit in the anime).
This couple however lacked the proper disclosure in both the anime and the manga. Although it was implied in the Kenshin Kaden that Aoshi and Misao came together when they visited the Himura’s, it was never really mentioned if the two ended up with each other. The anime, in episode 89, explored Aoshi seeing Misao in a completely new light.
Also, this is one of the most heart-wrenching pairs I’ve ever seen, with Misao’s devotion to Aoshi and Aoshi’s less than warm response to the young girl’s feelings.
Agh! Perfect material for aspiration fanfic writers– I must admit I started writing fanfics based on these two so Aoshi and Misao’s pairing would always have a special place in my heart. ^_^
Btw, the stuff below are made from pure imagination, specifically, my own. This is just a little fun and what I think of whenever I remember Aoshi and Misao.
Theme Song: I really like the song “Ice Blue Eyes” and “It’s Gonna Rain” for the pair (it’s from the RK album) but on the other hand, the contemporary hit song “Wherever You Will Go” by The Calling seems to fit this pair like a really comfortable pair of shoes.
Wedding Motif: Ice blue! Ice blue! Need I say more? But I can imagine Okina having a hand in that motif too. Can you imagine a ninja-inspired wedding? Skin-tight gowns and shurikens flying everywhere! ^_^
Future Kids: Hmmm, I think having only one child, specifically, a daughter would be good for these two. Imagine, a daughter with Aoshi’s technique Kaiten Kenbu mastered and Misao’s looks, only more proportioned! ^_^ She’s gonna be the heir to the Oniwabanshuu! Sugoi!
AxM Waff: Episode 89 of the anime series Ruruoni Kenshin is enough to put rabid and beginning fans of Aoshi and Misao to waffy bliss! In my opinion, if you make that episode any more waffier, it would have been OOC for Aoshi. ^_^
